Finding it hard to save money? Need cash for upcoming summer months in Sydney? We’ve come up with 10 different ways to change your lifestyle to free up cash with some money saving tips.
- Try to use cash not cards when you are on a night out or during smoko, this will curve your spending on items you can’t afford. Don’t forget though that withdrawing cash is more expensive from another banks ATM (on average charging $2.50 per withdrawal).
- Once you set a budget and how much you want to save, add your savings account as a direct debit on your main account then you are guaranteed to put this amount to one side each week. BriX Projects pay every Thursday, so we would suggest setting up a direct debit every Friday into your savings account.
- Check your spending regularly; taking a second to double check everything you have spent is the best way to not be caught short. Check for trends with your spending, look for items you can cut the following week
- Sell unwanted items on eBay or Gumtree. This can be time consuming but will soon add up if you have unwanted designer clothes, jewellery, mobile phones, furniture etc.
- Try online shopping, as this will help reduce impulse buying and being drawn into special offers/discounts for items you don’t necessarily need.
- Make lifestyle changes and stick to them. Instead of going to the pub after work join the local gym, make time each week to go food shopping so that you aren’t wasting money on expensive take away meals. Prepare your lunch for work the night before so that you are organised in the morning and not grabbing expensive pre-packed food through-out the day.
- Switch from a contract mobile phone to a prepaid so that you are not tied into a minimum spend or minimum contract.
- Cancel your credit cards – do you really need them or are you living beyond your means?
- Buy for value, not price. For example, quality steel toe work boots will last longer than cheap boots which could result in you spending more in the long run. Cheaper isn’t always better!
- Negotiate big purchases such as your rent, a new car, holidays or a television. If you don’t ask, you don’t get. You’ll be surprised at how many stores now accept this kind of negotiation – and you will be more surprised by the discount they offer you!
