Sydney Opera House – Top for Tourists & Locals Alike
The Sydney Opera house has been one of Australia’s top tourist attractions since it was first opened in 1973, and is one of the 20th century’s most famous and distinctive buildings. It was originally designed by Danish architect Jorn Utzon, who was the winner of an international design competition and was selected as the winner in 1957.
Given that the design is now 60 years old and it has been open to the public for 43 years, the New South Wales Government is picking up a bill of $202 million to upgrade its features to ensure that the centre for the arts continues to reflect the forever evolving arts community. It is being funded through the Cultural Infrastructure Fund and the work will start in May 2017, a project that will last 4.5 years in total.
Sydney Opera House’s CEO Louise Herron said “these renewal projects are designed to ensure the Opera House continues to evolve, welcoming and inspiring people”.
The work on the Opera House will include:
- Upgrades to the acoustics, accessibility and flexibility of the famous Concert Hall.
- Transforming office space into a new Creative Learning Centre.
- Creating a permanent function centre within the building.
- Upgrades to the foyer.
- Removing car access from beneath the monumental steps.
With Sydney constantly evolving to meet the needs of its proud residents and tourists alike with the introduction of new transport systems, upgrades to such important spots such as the Opera House, it’s easy to see that Sydney is a city that is looking to the future.
