Welcome to the world of Labour Hire – Everything you need to know

Labour hire is a fantastic way to gain skills, experience and professional connections whilst working on a wide variety of jobs, but it can be a bit daunting when you don’t know much about how it all works. You might have a million questions running through your head, ranging from whether you’ll have enough work, whether you’re skilled enough or the types of projects/locations you might be working on. To set the record straight, Brix Projects have prepared this blog post to fill you in on everything you need to know. Welcome to the world of labour hire!

What is labour hire?

Labour hire involves the outsourcing of skilled and unskilled workers, with companies typically hiring people to work on a short or long-term basis. Working as a contractor for Brix Projects, we are your first point of contact for any enquiries you may have. We will find a suitable position for you, and once on the project we take care of your payroll. With wide ranging industry connections, we can place you in exciting projects in the electrical, civil construction, rail construction, professional, skilled labourer and skilled trades fields.

All you need to do to get started is supply us with your resume, skills and experience. Once registered on our database, we will match you up with suitable projects and contact you to see if you would be interested.

With Sydney currently in the middle of a construction boom, there has never been a better time to get involved in the labour hire market. There is a limited supply of local skilled workers and the demand is at an all-time high, if you’d like to get involved then we’d love to hear from you!

What skills are needed?

Employers are on the lookout for highly skilled individuals who are capable and willing to perform a wide range of tasks on site. You will need to have physical skills to carry out tasks such as operating heavy machinery and lifting heavy loads, but you will also need some technical and inherent skills such as problem solving, basic numeracy/literacy and basic computer skills.

The requirements will differ for every job, and you need not be an expert. Your resume just needs to highlight your skills and abilities and how you’ve been able to use these in your previous positions. This will provide companies with some insight into your character and abilities, and they’ll be more confident in your ability to perform well in the role.

When you register with us, make sure that you provide as much information about your past experience as you can. Try to tailor your resume for the position you are applying for, as this will enable us to link you up with more projects and increase your exposure.

What else will I need?

In order to work in labour hire, you will need to hold a construction white card. This is a must for anyone working in construction, and those who hold a white card have full knowledge of workplace health and safety, risk management and the prevention of illness and injury.

If you already have one you will be ready to work, but if you don’t you can enrol in a course with TCP training at a cost of $120. The course takes 7 hours to complete, and at the end you will receive a statement of attainment. The SafeWork NSW White Card arrives in the mail within 60 days of course completion.

In addition to a white card, you’ll also need to have full personal protective equipment (PPE). This includes steel capped boots, hard hat and high-vis shirt.

Finally, don’t forget to bring a positive attitude. Employers value reliable workers and you’ll be sure to reap the rewards and gain some valuable experience along the way.

How it works at Brix Projects

Brix Projects have extensive connections with some of the nations leading contractors. We attract staff and clients through a wide range of channels including employment platforms, our website, referrals, networking, social media and much more.

Upon submitting your application, it will be reviewed by a member of our team. If successful, one of our friendly labour hire recruitment consultants will contact you to arrange a telephone interview and schedule a face to face interview.

At the interview we will ask you about past experience and the types of positions you would be interested in. If your interview goes well and you pass our screening process and reference checks, we will then allow you to register on our database. Once registered, we will start looking for suitable roles and contact you as they come up. In most cases we can have you working in as little as one week, and we’ll always keep you informed of progress.

Before you start a job, you will have full knowledge of the location, pay rate, start/end dates and the nature of the work. If you’re happy with the arrangement we will place you in the job, and you’ll just need to fill out a timesheet each week. Our payroll process is quick and simple, and you will receive weekly pay every Friday.
