Just a quick and obvious blog from us this week. Labour hire; what is labour hire and how does it work?
Wikipedia defines labour hire as:
Labour hire is the term applied (especially in Australia) to provision of outsourced skilled and unskilled blue-collar workers hired for short- or long-term positions. It is known by other names such as supplementary staffing, labour supply or temping. (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Labour_hire)
Labour hire is used across a number of industries such as hospitality, temporary office workers and construction (which is our area of expertise). There are several terms ‘workers’ can be referred to as such as:
- contractors;
- field employees;
- temps;
- on-hired employees;
- even just workers or employees.
The main difference between a labour hire worker and an employee though is that they are not employed by the company they are completing the tasked work for, but for the agency that supplied them to the company.
So if you are currently working for a labour hire agency, your employer is the agency, not the company that you are working for, this company is simply a client of the labour hire agency.
With such a large demand for skilled construction workers in Australia due to the growth within the industry and a low number of local skilled workers, labour hire is becoming increasingly popular and doesn’t look like it’s going anywhere. The trick is to find the right labour hire agency to work with; check out our blog on warning signs to watch out for.
